The ControlLogix 5590 is a multi-discipline controller for sequential, process, motion and drive control. It can be configured for standard, safety, redundancy or Logix SIS applications, allowing one hardware generation to support a broad range of automation strategies. Rockwell Automation says the platform is designed to simplify demanding control tasks while maintaining the familiar Logix engineering environment.
The launch was announced from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in October 2025. The timing reflects manufacturers' growing need to modernize production while preserving the proven control principles used across long-life industrial assets. Rather than treating safety, motion, process control and connectivity as separate projects, the 5590 gives engineering teams a common platform for new machines, line upgrades and plant-wide programs.
|
Integrated Safety
Every controller supports SIL 2 and PLd functional safety. Applications requiring SIL 3 and PLe can add a safety partner, giving plants a clear path from standard control to higher-integrity safety systems. |
Expanded Performance
The family offers as much as 80 MB of user memory, supports up to 512 real or virtual motion axes and can handle more than 600 EtherNet/IP nodes per controller. |
|
Connected Architecture
Two embedded 1 Gb EtherNet/IP ports can be configured for Dual-IP or Device Level Ring operation. CIP Security, secure boot and IEC 62443-4-2 compliance support a defense-in-depth approach. |
Engineering Continuity
ControlLogix 5590 is engineered in Studio 5000 Logix Designer version 38 and works within the wider FactoryTalk ecosystem, helping teams connect controller design, visualization and production information. |
The platform is intended for machine builders, system integrators and plant engineering teams working in discrete, hybrid, batch and continuous-process environments. Its multidiscipline design is especially relevant where motion, robotics, process loops and safety functions must coordinate in real time. Standard, XT and Process variants allow projects to match the controller to operating and environmental requirements.
A practical evaluation should begin with the existing chassis, network topology, I/O map, motion count, safety level and application memory. Rockwell Automation specifies a Series C chassis as the normal minimum, while a Series B chassis is supported within a derated temperature range. Engineers should also confirm enclosure, redundancy, partner-module and firmware requirements before final hardware selection.
The following models were selected from recent inventory lists for installed-base maintenance, network expansion and I/O planning. Confirm compatibility, series and firmware against the target system before ordering.
