Emerson describes DeltaV M-Series Traditional I/O as a modular subsystem for process-control installations, including equipment located near field devices. An I/O interface combines an I/O card with an I/O terminal block on an interface carrier. The family covers analog and discrete signals as well as thermocouple, millivolt and RTD inputs. This breadth makes the product family useful in existing plants, expansion projects and maintenance programs, but it also means that a similar-looking module is not enough evidence for substitution.
Current Emerson ordering tables primarily identify M-Series terminal-block options with VE model numbers. The same official data sheet separately references KJ identifiers when describing certain earlier card versions. For that reason, KJ and VE prefixes should not be treated as a universal one-to-one conversion. When a label or existing product record shows KJ, 12P and VE information together, copy every code exactly, retain suffixes and series information, and compare the complete label with the official ordering table.
| SIGNAL | Confirm AI, AO, DI, DO, thermocouple/mV or RTD before comparing model numbers. |
| TERMINATION | Distinguish standard, redundant, fused, 4-wire and mass-termination choices; they are separate orderable options. |
| SYSTEM | Confirm the controller, carrier, DeltaV software version, redundancy requirement and environmental approval. |
Emerson's compatibility table pairs every card type with approved traditional or mass terminal blocks and shows each card's key position. The first terminal block listed is the recommended option. Function and field-wiring protection keys help prevent the wrong card from being inserted into a terminal block, but procurement must still begin with the documented signal type, channel count and wiring arrangement. For example, an eight-channel 4–20 mA HART analog input may use standard, redundant, fused, 4-wire or mass-termination variants, each with a different VE number.
M-Series Traditional I/O requires MQ, MX or PK controllers together with M-Series horizontal or VerticalPlus carriers. Emerson also notes software-version requirements for newer Plus cards and explains that M-Series horizontal I/O carriers are not physically compatible with S-Series horizontal controller carriers. Maintenance engineers, system integrators and buyers should therefore verify the installed carrier, controller, software release, card series, terminal block and full label photographs before approving a replacement.
These are reference models from Emerson's official M-Series ordering information. They are not a blanket compatibility list. Before ordering, confirm the complete KJ, 12P and VE label data where present, plus the card series, signal type, terminal-block option, software version, quantity and clear label photographs.
