A seven-slot, panel-mounted modular chassis that provides the mechanical structure and SLC backplane for a processor or communication adapter and compatible 1746 I/O modules.
| Catalog number | 1746-A7 |
| Product family | SLC 500 modular hardware |
| Chassis capacity | 7 module slots |
| Mounting | Panel mount |
| Dimensions with tabs | 28.2 × 17.1 × 14.5 cm (11.3 × 6.8 × 5.8 in), W × H × D |
| Approximate weight | 1.1 kg (2.4 lb), without modules |
| Maximum backplane current | 5.1 V DC at 10 A; 24 V DC at 2.88 A |
| Lifecycle | Discontinued March 31, 2024; no planned Rockwell Automation replacement |
The chassis distributes backplane power and communication between installed modules. Each chassis requires its own compatible SLC power supply mounted at the left side. The chassis does not replace the processor, power supply, communication adapter or I/O modules; these are separate components unless explicitly included in the quotation.
| Condition | Reference |
|---|---|
| Operating temperature | 0…60 °C (32…140 °F) |
| Storage temperature | −40…85 °C (−40…185 °F) |
| Relative humidity | 5…95%, noncondensing |
Use an enclosure appropriate for the installation environment. Verify regulatory markings on the actual chassis nameplate because approvals can vary by series and manufacturing date.
| Symptom | Inspection focus |
|---|---|
| Multiple modules lose power | Power supply, chassis connector, grounding and total backplane load |
| One slot behaves intermittently | Module seating, slot connector damage, contamination and bent contacts |
| Communication faults across chassis | Processor or adapter, interconnect cable orientation and chassis sequence |
| Visible debris in open slot | De-energize, inspect safely and fit a 1746-N2 slot filler after correction |
Rockwell documentation permits up to three modular chassis and up to 30 module slots under one local processor or I/O adapter arrangement. Each chassis requires its own power supply, and the proper 1746 chassis interconnect cable must be selected for the physical spacing. Cable selection, orientation and chassis addressing must follow the system manual.
Rockwell lists 1746-A7 as discontinued with no planned direct Rockwell replacement. For SLC I/O migration, official documentation maps the seven-slot 1746-A7 footprint to the 1492-CH1746-7 conversion chassis. That conversion chassis supports up to seven 1746 conversion positions and up to nine Compact 5000 I/O cards, subject to the selected conversion architecture.
Does 1746-A7 include a power supply?
Not unless explicitly stated in the quotation. Each chassis requires a separately selected compatible SLC power supply.
Are seven I/O modules always available?
The system configuration may require a processor or communication adapter position. Confirm the complete slot plan.
Can 1746-A4, A10 or A13 replace it directly?
No direct mechanical substitution should be assumed because slot count, panel dimensions and layout differ.
Can multiple chassis be linked?
Yes, when the correct interconnect cable, power supplies, chassis order and supported processor or adapter configuration are used.
What should I send for verification?
Chassis label and series, front and rear photos, installed module list, power-supply model, interconnect cables, panel dimensions, quantity and destination.
The quotation will confirm condition, supply scope, compatibility review, warranty, availability and lead time.
Commercial and technical scope is confirmed for the specific chassis offered, including series, physical condition, included hardware and shipping terms.
| Warranty | Period and coverage stated in the formal quotation |
| Returns | Prior authorization and inspection evidence required |
| Discrepancy reporting | Provide packaging, label and product photos promptly |
| Technical support | Assistance comparing series, power supply, module list and migration needs |
Send the chassis label, installed modules, power-supply model, quantity and destination.
SLC-related models appear first, followed by other Allen-Bradley controller, I/O, communication and interface references.
