The ABB SPAJ140C Combined Overcurrentand Earth-Fault Relay is a multifunctional protection relay combining overcurrent and earth-fault detection in a single compact unit. As a secondary relay connected to current transformers, the Power Supply ABB SPAJ140C continuously monitors phase and neutral currents, triggering circuit breaker tripping, auto-reclosing, alarms, and fault recording when thresholds are exceeded. Its low-set stages (I> and I0>) initiate actions after ~60 ms, while high-set stages (I>> and I0>>) respond within ~40 ms for rapid fault isolation.

The ABB SPAJ140C DCS Module offers flexible time-current characteristics, including definite time or IDMT operation for both overcurrent and earth-fault units. It provides six curve options: four standardized curves (Normal/Very/Extremely/Long-time inverse per BS 142/IEC 60255) plus specialized RI and RXIDG curves. This versatility allows precise coordination with other protective devices in industrial or utility power systems.

Configurable output relays enable the SPAJ140C ABB PDF to deliver start signals for blocking co-protection relays, alarm signaling, or auto-reclosing initiation. An integrated binary input supports remote control functions—such as stage blocking, manual reset of latched relays, or dynamic setting group changes—enhancing system adaptability.

SPAJ 140 C Overcurrent and earth-fault relay User's manual and Technical description

The combined overcurrent and earth-fault relay is a secondary relay to be connected to the current transformers of the protected object. The three-phase overcurrent unit and the earthfault unit continuously measure the phase currents and the neutral current of the protected object. On detection of a fault the relay starts, trips the circuit breaker, initiates auto-reclosing, provides alarm, records fault data etc. in accordance with the application and the configured relay functions.

When the phase current exceeds the set start current of the low-set stage I>, the overcurrent unit starts delivering a start signal after a preset ~60 ms start time. When the set operate time at definite time operation or the calculated operate time at inverse time operation elapses, the overcurrent unit operates. In the same way the highset stage I>> of the overcurrent unit starts delivering a start signal after a preset ~40 ms start time, when the set start current is exceeded. When the set operate time elapses, the overcurrent unit operates.
