Operational Characteristics and Diagnostic Use of Thrust Transmitters
While thrust transmitters offer a practical solution for measuring rotor axial position and trending thrust readings, they have notable limitations compared to full continuous monitoring systems. Although capable of alarming on thrust position and performing non-OK checks, they lack advanced monitor functions like Timed OK channel defeat, Danger Bypass, and Trip Multiply. Furthermore, PLCs connected to these transmitters cannot integrate with plant-wide diagnostic systems such as System 1 or Rule Paks. For diagnostics, the "Prox Out" coaxial connector provides a non-isolated dynamic signal that can be connected to battery-powered or isolated test equipment. However, due to its lack of isolation from the 4–20 mA loop, using the 990/991 Test Adapter is strongly recommended. This adapter conditions, inverts, and isolates the signal for use with AC-powered analyzers and oscilloscopes, ensuring both signal integrity and machinery protection safety.
