1746-NIO4I Functional Description
The 1746-NIO4I Analog I/O Modules Allen-Bradley represents a versatile analog interface solution within the established SLC 500 programmable controller family, delivering combined input and output functionality in a single-slot form factor. This compact module efficiently provides two configurable input channels alongside two dedicated current output channels, offering system designers a space-efficient method for handling both signal acquisition and control command delivery in industrial automation environments. The engineering design behind the ROCKWELL SLC 500 1746-NIO4I emphasizes operational flexibility, allowing each input channel to be independently configured for either voltage or current signals through software settings rather than physical components.
A significant technical advantage of the High Resolution Analog Input/Output Module 1746-NIO4I is its dual-channel current output capability, which delivers standardized 4-20 mA control signals for regulating field devices such as proportional valves, variable frequency drives, and process controllers. The module maintains signal integrity through electrical isolation and noise rejection circuits, ensuring reliable performance even when installed in electrically noisy industrial settings. This robust construction makes the Allen-Bradley 1746-NIO4I suitable for demanding applications across manufacturing, process control, and machinery automation sectors.
The power management system of the 1746-NIO4I Allen-Bradley High Resolution Analog Input/Output Module demonstrates thoughtful engineering, requiring both 5V DC and 24V DC power typically sourced from the SLC 500 backplane. This power configuration ensures stable operation while maintaining compatibility with the broader controller ecosystem. The modular architecture of the Allen-Bradley 1746-NIO4I allows for straightforward integration into existing SLC 500 systems, with configuration accomplished through standard programming software that provides intuitive setup screens for channel parameters, scaling, and diagnostics.
In practical application environments, the 1746-NIO4I Allen Bradley COMBINATION I/O MODULE serves as a crucial interface between discrete control logic and continuous process variables, enabling precise monitoring and manipulation of analog parameters. The proven reliability of the module has established its position as a trusted component in numerous industrial control systems, particularly in applications requiring both sensor feedback and actuator control within limited space constraints. Its continued deployment across various industries underscores its effective design and functional utility within the Rockwell Automation ecosystem.

SLC 500 System
Analog modules require both 5V dc and 24V dc power from the backplane of the SLC 500 system. However, the NO4I and NO4V analog modules can use an external 24V dc power supply. This eliminates the 24V dc backplane power requirement, providing configuration flexibility if SLC power supply loading is critical. Thesetwo modules provide user-supplied external 24V dc power supply connections.
The 24V dc user power connection on a fixed SLC 500 can power an NO4I or NO4V analog module. However, the regulation of the 24V dc user connection on a modular SLC 500 power supply, Catalog Number 1746-P1, -P2, -P4 is outside of the requirements of the NO4I and NO4V analog modules and cannot be used.
