Limitations of Vibration Transmitters in Monitoring Applications
Vibration transmitters present significant functional limitations when compared to comprehensive continuous vibration monitoring systems. While they serve as practical solutions for measuring general vibration levels and provide valuable overall vibration trending data, their diagnostic capabilities remain substantially constrained. These devices cannot capture dynamic vibration signals essential for detailed machinery diagnostics, particularly during vibration alarm events. The 4-20 mA output signal fundamentally lacks the capability to determine vibration phase information, limiting its usefulness for advanced analysis.
The transmitter's functionality is restricted to basic peak vibration alarming and non-OK checking, excluding critical monitor functions such as gap alarms, phase alarms, timed OK channel defeat, danger bypass, and trip multiplication. When integrated with PLC systems, vibration transmitters can only provide peak-to-peak trending data, making them unsuitable for plant-wide diagnostic systems like System 1 or Rule Paks. These limitations emphasize that while vibration transmitters offer cost-effective solutions for basic monitoring, they cannot replace the comprehensive capabilities of full vibration monitoring systems for critical machinery protection and advanced diagnostic requirements.
